The Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020
You will all be aware of the headlines in the news and media about changes to the Law on selling firewood, which was phased in and now includes all firewood producers from 1st May 2022.
Basically there are 3 classifications of firewood:
1: READY TO BURN
2: DRY SEASONED
3: PART SEASONED
THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU BUY FIREWOOD TO BURN ON A WOODBURNER OR OPEN FIRE.
The Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020
A - From the 1st May 2022 the Regulations apply to every Firewood retailer in England no
matter how much or how little Firewood they sell.
B - READY TO BURN. You can only legally supply or sell wood fuel in volumes of less than 2 cubic metres if it is certified as ‘Ready to Burn’. This confirms it has a moisture content (MC) of 20% or less.
Woodleigh Wood have already been Audited and Certified to supply ‘Ready to Burn’, which we chose to do in September 2020 and as such, we are required to have ongoing annual Audits and have a unique Certification No. which is listed on the ‘Woodsure’ website.
C - If you order less than 2m3 of Firewood from any source, it legally has to be certified as ‘Ready to Burn’.
D - DRY SEASONED. Wood fuel sales of Dry Seasoned of 2 cubic metres or more does not need to be Certified. Drying instructions stated in the Regulations are required to be provided even if the wood is below 20% moisture content.
E - PART SEASONED. Wood fuel sales of Part-Seasoned of 2 cubic metres or more does not need to be Certified. Drying instructions stated in the Regulations are required to be provided.
SUMMARY.
Whenever possible we encourage all our customers to continue to buy Part-Seasoned and
Dry Seasoned firewood from us in quantities of 2m3 and above, just like they have for
many years. These are the 2 best value for money types of firewood you can buy.
‘Ready to burn’ firewood will be available from us for those who can’t possibly store more
than 1m3 but will be more expensive than Dry Seasoned, as we naturally air dry it and it
has to be stored for longer just to lose a few % MC more than our dry seasoned.
Our Dry seasoned firewood generally has a MC of 17 – 24%.
I can see no advantage whatsoever in buying the more expensive ‘Ready to burn’ firewood.
Nearly all ‘Ready to burn’ you see offered for sale has been force dried in kilns using fossil
fuels, woodfuel or has been imported from Russia, Latvia or Eastern Europe and
transported in huge gas guzzling lorries, producing toxic carbon monoxide emissions
harmful to humans and the planet. Even UK produced Kiln Dried firewood is not a local
product and will have travelled long distances in lorries.
This can never be the right thing to be considering buying – say no to Kiln Dried firewood !
Part Seasoned firewood is the best value firewood available.
All our timber comes from FSC Certified Woodlands and is from local forestry and
woodland thinnings, where poorer trees are removed to allow trees for timber to thrive.
A 2m3 delivery of our perfect split firewood when stacked neatly only takes up 1 1/3 m3.
Our aim at Woodleigh Wood is to try to minimise the effect the ongoing increasing timber prices has on the prices we charge you for our firewood.
We are encouraging our Firewood customers to increase their storage capacity, which will help you and us.
Additional storage allows you to buy and store our lower priced Part-seasoned firewood in the Spring/ early summer and make substantial cost savings by buying in bulk at our Special Offer prices.
If stored outside with excellent airflow, covered correctly and following our guidance on the Website, Firewood bought before the end of June at the very latest will be ready by Autumn.
100’s of our customers have been doing this for many years and return to order again every Spring.
Firewood is delivered tipped loose off a tipper truck for you to move in a tub trug or wheelbarrow and store away.
Wheelbarrows and Tub Trugs are available locally from Martin Pears Engineering near Halwell.
